FfAI responds to contexts and conditions characterized by:
- limited financial resources, often available only under conditions imposed by philanthropic, market or institutional funding mechanisms
- lack of opportunities for artists and curators to reflect, think, plan, research, meet or travel on their own terms
- periods of rapid change, instability, uncertainty, and the failure of existing models (museums, art academies, universities, funders) to respond to changing contexts and needs
Within its grant programs, FfAI focuses on specific areas of interest where it feels it can make a unique impact. These may be areas at critical moments — whether culturally or politically — where the arts may play an important role or where issues of contemporary memory and its legacies are involved.
